Educational Resources
The following educational curriculum was developed by Trout Unlimited’s Eastern Abandoned Mine Program. Funding for this project was provided by a 2011 Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection environmental education grant and matching funds from the R.K. Mellon Foundation. The curriculum is focused on abandoned mine drainage (AMD), the leading source of water pollution in Pennsylvania. These materials were developed for students in grades 8 -12. However, the resources contained in this curriculum may also be adapted for younger students or adults.
The AMD curriculum contains five individual lessons that could be taught over the course of a week or divided into shorter sessions, depending upon the needs of the course. Each of the five lessons contain a PowerPoint presentation (complete with teacher notes outlining the major points of each slide and questions and activities for students), in-class activities, homework assignments, supplemental readings, and quiz/exam questions. These lessons were developed into a standard lesson plan format with Pennsylvania state standards. Each lesson also incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning and hands-on activities to engage students. To download these resources please select the lesson you will be using below.
History of Coal Mining in Pennsylvania
Coldwater Ecology
Formation of AMD
Impacts of AMD on Coldwater Streams
Treatment of AMD
We hope that you find these educational materials useful and easy to incorporate into your curriculum. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Trout Unlimited at [email protected].
